چکیده

Upon ratification, the recent climate treaty negotiated in Kyoto, Japan, would require the United States and other developed nations to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases below 1990 levels by the year 2010. Because most anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions (particularly CO2) come from the use of fossil energy, this agreement has the potential to affect the entire fabric of society. Here, we present a practical and revolutionary method that can sequester greenhouse-gas emissions and at the same time benefit both agriculture and the economy. The proposed strategy utilizes an innovative application of chemical processes to convert CO2, NOx, and SOx emissions into valuable fertilizers [mainly, NH4HCO3 and (NH2)2CO] that can enhance sequestration of CO2 into soil and subsoil earth layers, reduce NO3 contamination of groundwater, and stimulate photosynthetic fixation of CO2 from the atmosphere. This systematic technology concept (Fig. 1) could contribute importantly to global CO2 sequestration and environmental protection.

The energy policy consequences of future CO2 capture and sequestration technologies

Within the framework of the ETP project, the IEA has assessed the potential and the consequences of CO2 capture and sequestration for long-term energy policies. A number of policy scenarios were analysed quantitatively in order to assess the future role of CO2 capture technology from an economic, energy security and environmental perspective. The preliminary results suggest an important role fo...

Carbon Dioxide Sequestration: How Much and When?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration has been proposed as a key component in technological portfolios for managing anthropogenic climate change, since it may provide a faster and cheaper route to significant reductions in atmospheric CO2 concentrations than abating CO2 production. However, CO2 sequestration is not a perfect substitute for CO2 abatement because CO2 may leak back into the atmospher...

A new Bi-objective model for a Two-echelon Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem for Perishable Products with the Environmental Factor

In multi-echelon distribution strategy freight is delivered to customers via intermediate depots. Rather than using direct shipments, this strategy is an increasingly popular one in urban logistics. This is primarily to alleviate the environmental (e.g., energy usage and congestion) and social (e.g., traffic-related air pollution, accidents and noise) consequences of logistics operations. This ...

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing for Geologic Carbon Sequestration Field Monitoring

In order to constrain the growth of atmospheric CO2, Geologic Carbon Sequestration (GCS) has been proposed as one “clean coal” technology for mitigating the more extreme impacts of global warming. An important issue to ensure the successful storage of carbon dioxide in geologic sequestration sites is the ability to monitor these sites for possible leakage. More understanding of CO2 storage proc...

Co-location of air capture, subseafloor CO2 sequestration, and energy production on the Kerguelen plateau.

Reducing atmospheric CO2 using a combination of air capture and offshore geological storage can address technical and policy concerns with climate mitigation. Because CO2 mixes rapidly in the atmosphere, air capture could operate anywhere and in principle reduce CO2 to preindustrial levels. We investigate the Kerguelen plateau in the Indian Ocean, which offers steady wind resources, vast subsea...
